A non-technical track
This iconic easy grade loop has provided the first step to a life-long enjoyment of mountain biking for so many, both young and old. Circumnavigating much of this hugely significant and historical piece of forest known as the “Heritage Forest”, this trail is absolutely a must do and will be enjoyed by all riders.
The original plantings were established through the Forest Service to test the commercial viability of numerous tree species from around the world.
This trail is dual direction, but is recommended as ridden in an anti-clockwise direction. For 6 km enjoy smooth flowing single track through the most incredible variety of trees, including Japanese and Norwegian larch, spruce, elder, ponderosa pine, willow and fir.
The trail remains cool even on the hottest days as you ride through fully established trees dating back to the early 1900’s.
Take your time, stop lots and give thanks to the vision those who planted and developed this unique slice of New Zealand history.
